A Rapidly Changing Workforce
Demographic experts agree that Canada’s population and workforce are undergoing profound changes that will mean employers will face a significant shortage of workers. As well, our future workforce will look very different from today’s.
- The Canadian government estimates that by 2011, 41% of the working
population will be between the ages of 45 and 64, compared to 29% in 1991.
- Baby Boomers are heading into their pre-retirement
and retirement years. Canada’s birth rate has been declining since the 1960s, making
recruitment of younger workers more difficult.
- While the average age of retirement has been steadily dropping, many of those
who have ‘retired’ look for new work.
- Older women make up an increasing portion of the workforce.
Employers are encouraged to examine and consider new approaches to policies and practices to ensure they are able to retain and recruit the workers they will need in the future.
